Product Details

Mappilai Samba Red Rice is famous variety of Tamil Nadu. This rice is known for building strength and is highly nutritious.

This full bran (unpolished, red) rice is a good choice for daily use as plain boiled rice, but needs additional cooking.


This rice can be cooked in the pressure cooker or the traditional way in an open vessel (closed with a normal lid).

Parboiled rice takes longer to cook than raw rice. Rice with bran takes longer to cook than polished rice.


Par boiled rice (Puzhungal arisi) is prepared by partly boiling the paddy before milling it, involving steaming, soaking and drying.

Traditionally, all these processes were carried out manually. Today, rice mills have steam cookers, in which the par boiling process is undertaken without too much manual effort.

Parboiling improves the nutritional profile of the rice and also made it easier for manual processing (traditional hand pounding) with higher recovery rates; i.e. the amount of rice obtained from paddy processing is higher. It also helps to keep the rice for longer, particularly in the hot and humid climate in the rice growing regions.

Parboiling results in many of the nutrients moving from the husk to the endosperm. It also makes the rice easily digestible. Ayurveda recommends using par boiled rices. The par boiled rice kernels look more translucent and tend to be less sticky when cooked.
